The Lumbar Facet Radiofrequency Procedure
Facet radiofrequency is an injection procedure which numbs the nerve endings that go to small joints in the neck, mid back, and low back. A heat lesion is created on certain nerves with the goal of interrupting the pain signals to the brain, thus eliminating the facet pain. The procedure is easily done with local anesthetic and mild sedation and usually takes about 10 minutes. Facet Radiofrequency is commonly preceded by a diagnostic facet block which will confirm that the origin of the pain is in a specific joint. Pain relief can last from six months to more than a year, which may make this a viable alternative to more aggressive treatments like surgery.
